Biology Collection # 2: Nelson Damachi

Pollinator: An insect that carries pollen from one flower to another this enable fertilization and sexual reproduction, examples are butterflies and bees.
Stem herbaceous: A plant lacking a permanent woody stem; many are flowering garden plants or potherbs; some having medicinal properties and some are pests. They are structures that look and act like leaves with leaf-like texture and color

Insect: These are small air-breathing arthropods that have a hard exoskeleton, a three-part body; head, thorax, and abdomen and three pairs of jointed legs. As one can see the fly above has all attributes that make up an insect. They are different varieties, such as ants, bees, and cockroaches.
Heartwood: This is the older inactive central wood of a tree or woody plant; usually darker and denser than the surrounding sapwood. If one cuts the tree trunk above in two, they will see a thin light brown portion, and a denser dark portion, this dark portion is referred to as the heartwood.

Gymnosperm leaf: A plant, such as a cycad or conifer, whose seeds are not enclosed within an ovary. They come in a few varieties such as awl-like, scale-like, and needle-like. The one above is an example of a needle-like gymnosperm-leaf.

Endotherm: This is a warm-blooded animal which maintains a constant body temperature, a few example are birds, cats, dogs and most notably human beings.

Deciduous leaf: Plants that shed their leaves seasonally, mostly during the cold and dry seasons, annually. Examples are trees and shrubs. What is impressive about them are wide array of colors that their leaves display before they are shed. This tree sheds its leaves every fall season, therefore it is a deciduous leaf.

Basidiomycete: Members of a group of fungi called Basidiomycotina, which includes mushrooms, shelf fungi and puffballs. They produce spores that are formed on the outside of a special cell called the basidium. The mushroom above could be characterized as a basidiomycete.

Autotroph: An organism that makes organic material from inorganic material; a primary producer; examples includes plants, phytoplankton, and some bacteria. The picture of grass above depicts an autotroph because it produces its own food and is a primary producer.

Animal that has a segmented body: This is an animal that is divided into parts often with slight variations down the length of the body; mostly insects such as ants and centipedes and animals such as lobsters.

Nelson Damachi: Biology Collection # 1

A thorn is a short, hard, pointed part of a stem or branch of a woody plant, or leaf. They are often used for protection.
A stem-woody is the persistent main stalk of a shrub, typically rising above ground. The outer layer is the cortex which may be covered with a corky bark, or wood. The best example of a stem-woody is a tree trunk.

A pine cone is an organ on plants that contains the reproductive structures. The familiar woody cone is the female cone, which produces seeds. Female pine cones contain ovules which are fetilized by pollen, become seeds. They are related to conifer leaves.

An arthropod is invertebrate having jointed limbs and a segmented body with an exoskeleton made of chitin, and spiders are air-breathing chelicerate arthropods that have eight legs. Spiders are not considered insects but do fall under athropods.

The picture above is of a fleshy fruit with seed, a peach, a fruit is the ripened reproductive body of a seed. All seed plants share two characteristics. They have vascular tissue and use seeds to reproduce.

An exoskeleton is an external skeleton that supports and protects an animal's body. Examples are a shell on a tortoise, crustacea on a crab, or as you can see fingernails on a human being.

A eukaryote is an organism whose cells possess a nucleus and other membrane-bound vesicles; including all members of the protist, fungi, plant, and animal kingdoms, for example the plant cells on this plant are eukaryote.

This picture is of a fruit dried with seed; a fruit is the ripened reproductive body of a seed. All seed plants share two characteristics, they have vascular tissue and use seeds to reproduce. The peach seed has been left under the sun to dry

A conifer leaf is the cone bearing tree of the Pine family, usually evergreen and some examples, are spruce and fir, and most of conifer leaves are woody plants.

Cellulose is a complex carbohydrate that forms the main component of the cell wall in most plants. In other words it is located in the cell wall of most plants. It makes up 33% of all plant matter, and can be found in other natural resources like cotton and wood.
